Dear Yuletide Letter 2024
Hello my dear writer!
Thank you for whatever you write, I am sure that I will love it and I plan to comment early (in ET not UST) on December 25th, which may not be early for you though (apologies, if so). I'm so pleased that we matched on a fandom and I hope that my prompts inspire you, but if you go in a different direction, I'll be okay with that as well!
General Likes: I generally like the fics I read to be on the fluffy or smutty side, but these prompts call for some angst. I can deal with some pining, obliviousness, or wound tending, but serious torture, character death or degrading language take me out of a story. I love these characters and fic can be wish fulfillment and I wish for them to be happy! (Or as happy as canon allows for some of these couples/characters)
I like time loops/time travel and finding love within tragedies/doomed narratives. I love characters that try their best, even or especially given the circumstances. I like stubborn characters bending for things they find important. I like missing scenes and future speculation and callbacks and deep conversations on philosophy (as most of these characters have seen death and war and been dealt terrible hands - as someone with depression I like when characters find a way to still get up in the morning and find things to smile and laugh about, like hope and love and reason to keep going). I am okay with baby/kid fic as two of my requested characters are mothers.
Do Not Wants: suicide, self harm, fat-phobia, homophobia, racism, transphobia, Islamophobia, antisemitism, rape/non-con, killing or torturing a female character to get a reaction from a male character
FANDOMS:
1. Terminator Movies (1984 and 1991): Sarah Connor & Kyle Reese
I recently saw The Terminator this year and it blew me away!
Here is my tumblr tag for them where I kinda went wild and reblogged every post I could find from the 1984 movie and that deleted scene where Sarah dreams about Kyle coming to her in the compound where she's locked up. I don't know how you feel about deleted scenes and if they count as canon, so I will leave it up to you if that's a thing that Sarah does often (was Kyle 'with her' (in her mind at least) when going through labour and birthing John? Other times? When John ran away? When he didn't believe her story about his future? How often is hallucination or dream!Kyle a part of Sarah's life/parenting?) I love that he calls her 'soldier', the same way she called him 'soldier' to get him up when he was spiraling in The Terminator. When does Sarah start to see herself as a soldier in this future war?
Of course, if you don't want to deal with projections or dreams, I'd love any sort of missing scene, maybe of them getting to know one another after the attack on the police station. They drive for quite some time. Does Sarah try to teach Reese any road trip travel games? If so, does it get personal eventually? Who offers up vulnerability first? What's the reaction? Is this mirrored later when they are in the motel making bombs?
2. Percy Jackson and the Olympians: Sally Jackson and Poseidon
Here is my tumblr tag for Sally Jackson (which I've used on any post that even vaguely mentions either or both of Percy's parents).
I really adored the changes the show made to the book canon and how Sally and Poseidon were portrayed. I loved that we got a flashback scene where they actually talked! I loved that we saw Sally with flaws and frustration and that she was doing her best under extremely difficult circumstances - a bit of a departure from Percy's book POV where she's just a saint without desires of her own.
But what about their first meeting? It was in Montauk, at the beach house, and Sally knew right away that something was different. What did Poseidon think? What made him break his vow? How long did they spend together? How often does Poseidon keep tabs on her? How did the conversation go when Sally discovered she was pregnant? Or if you want to place your story after S1, what is it like when they meet again with a grown-up Percy in the equation who knows about that side of his family now?
3. His Dark Materials: Will Parry and Mary Malone
Here is my tumblr tag for the tv series. It is mostly Will/Lyra focused, but there are a few Mary posts too.
I'm looking for a post-series story here, because while Will and Mary did not bond as much as Lyra and Mary did, they are the only two people in the world who have visible daemons and can talk about what they've experienced. I don't think they will be fast friends, especially as Will copes with his immediate loss of Lyra and their future together and then suddenly has to go back into Find-and-Care-For-Mum mode, but I think they'd meet up. Maybe when things or tough, or maybe only when things are good and worth celebrating?
Because I'm choosing giver's choice, it's up to you whether you want to write about Will or Mary (or them meeting up, if you choose that). I believe in the book that Mary helps Will find care for his mother, but that can be up to you as the show does not give any details post-closing-of-the-knife-rift. It is up to you as well if Will goes into the medical field as I believe Pullman says, but the tv series does not explicitly show this.
I really loved the changes the show made to the book canon, and I'd love for more insight into these characters that I find so fascinating. How do they deal with being back in their world? How do their hide talking to their daemons? How do they make new relationships? How do they keep the old ones they had prior to the show (Will with his mother, knowing his father is dead and Mary with her sister and nephew/niece)?
Will dealing with racism from school mates/teachers/police/etc. should be handled delicately as I do not want to erase his experience as a Black teen growing up in the UK, but as I want him to be happy in his world, I hope that if this is touched upon that it is just a minor point in the larger story the fic is trying to tell.
